Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Marlene (Hahling) Gutermuth Bireline, 88, of the Forest Park Heights section of Springfield, passed away on Tuesday, August 9, 2016. She passed into Eternal Life at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 4, 1928 in Tann, Germany, a beloved daughter of the late Josef and Agathe (Coenen) Hahling. She was raised in Germany and graduated elementary and high school there and moved to New Jersey with her family in 1955. She lived in East Orange, New Jersey for many years and later moved to Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Colorado before moving to Springfield in 2010. While living in New Jersey, she received an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Essex County College in Newark, New Jersey and later a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Montclair State University. She was employed as a Registered Nurse and had worked for many years at the Essex County Hospital Center in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, retiring as a Nursing Supervisor in 1990. She was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee and enjoyed knitting, reading, gardening, traveling and baking. Above all, she loved her family and friends and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. In addition to her beloved parents, she was predeceased by her beloved first husband, Henry Gutermuth; her beloved second husband, Richard Bireline; her dear brother, Kurt Hahling; and her dear sister, Lilo Mueller. She leaves her four loving children, Beate (Gutermuth) Bolen and her partner, Matthew Forte, of Springfield, Stefan M. Gutermuth and his wife, Janis, of Flanders, NJ, Joanna M. Gutermuth of East Orange, NJ and Carol (Gutermuth) Kerr and her husband, Neville, of Springfield; her five cherished grandchildren, Kenneth Bolen, Ashley Brenneman and her husband, Jesse, Sara Gutermuth, Lisa Gutermuth and Eric Gutermuth; her two cherished great-grandchildren, Velvet Bolen and Annika Brenneman; and her three cherished great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves her two dear sisters, Brigitte Ullrich of Germany and Anna Maria Summerlin and her husband, Errol, of Portland, TX; her dear sister-in-law, Christa Hahling of Germany; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Gutermuth, Bireline and Hahling families. Her funeral will be held on Saturday morning, August 13, 2016 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806) 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (the funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her Burial will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, August 12, 2016 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance of the funeral home are located at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
