Obituary

Rockland – William Powers Silva, 30, formerly of Abington, died unexpectedly, on Friday, August 5.

He was the beloved son of Ann M. Powers-Jones and Kenneth Jones of Rockland and John W. Silva, Sr. and Susan Silva of California. Billy was also the brother of John W. Silva, Jr. and his wife Kim of Whitman and Kim LeMay and her husband Dave of Whitman.

Born in Nashua, New Hampshire and raised in Abington, Billy was a 2004 graduate of Cardinal Spellman High School. He attended the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, where he studied Business Management.

In his younger years, Billy played hockey and football. He continued to be an avid sports fan, including a stint as a Fantasy Football commissioner.

He was a talented guitar player and a beautiful writer. Anyone who received a letter from Billy considered it a treasure. He inherited a great sense of humor from his maternal grandfather, also a Bill. He loved reading and the challenge of a good trivia contest, but his best times were spent surrounded by his family and many friends.

Billy was a kind and spiritual person who was close to his nephew Patrick and his nieces, Charlie-Ann, Ryann, Samantha, Devery, and Kailey.

He was the adored nephew of Ginny Powers-Collins, Billy Powers, Eleanor Powers, Catherine Powers-Ozyurt, Mary Doherty, Michael Silva, David Silva, Donny Grover, Shirley Jones, Russell Jones, and Danny Jones. Billy also leaves many cousins and friends, who join all of us in missing him greatly.

Billy was also the beloved grandson of the late Cecilia and William Powers (Nana and Do) of Rockland and Charlestown.

Family and friends are invited to attend Billy's memorial service on Saturday, August 13 at 1 p.m. in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel on Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) in Whitman. Visiting hours will be prior to the service, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please bring a photo (3x5 or 4x6) to add to a memory book.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Billy with donations in his name to: The Herren Project, PO Box 131, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Billy wrote this for his grandfather in 2000

My Grandfather, My Friend

You have left, and are gone away;
You’ve left us all nothing to say.
I know that you are in a better place,
Someplace laughing, with a smile on your face.

But, despite the fact that you are gone
I know that you want us all to move on.
Understand, this is a hard thing to do,
Though everyone will do their best
to make it through.

Even though this is true,
We all dearly miss and love you.
You are now with friends of the past,
And now can be happy, forever at last.

I can’t wait to meet you finally, in the end,
For you weren’t just my grandfather, but a friend.
So you have departed and gone above,
Where we will all join together in peace and in love.
