Obituary

Bonnevie, George J. Jr. of West Roxbury, Massachusetts, formerly of S. Portland, ME, son of the late George and Florence (Hodgkins) Bonnevie. Loving husband of Margaret (Curran) Bonnevie of West Roxbury, Massachusetts. Devoted father of Kelly and her wife Karen Kaufman of Chestnut Hill, MA; Mary Ellen of S. Portland, ME; Dr. George and his wife Megan (Whittlesey) Bonnevie of Norwell, MA; cherished “Gumpy” to Matt and Abby Kaufman, Caroline, Margot and George Bonnevie IV. Dear brother of Barbara and her late husband Charles Dyer and Joyce and her husband Albert Asali, all of Portland, ME and Richard and his late wife Shirley Bonnevie of Barre, MA. Also survived by sister-in-law Barbara Radecker and brother-in-law Martin (Carol) Curran, both of Geneva, NY. Predeceased by sister-in-law Catherine McGonagle and her husband, Fred. Adored uncle to many beloved nieces and nephews.

George attended Portland and Cheverus High Schools. A Korean War veteran, he served for seven years in both the US Navy aboard the USS Worcester and in the US Army, traveling around the world. He and Margaret made their home in the Sunset Park section of South Portland where they lived for 42 years until they moved to Boston in 2007. George retired from the US Postal Service in Portland after 35 years of service. He was a member of VFW #6859 and American Legion Post 17, both in Portland, and a former communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in S. Portland. George enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the family camp at Moosehead Lake. He coached Sunset Park Little League baseball and girls’ softball.

Interested in current affairs, George was a staunch Democrat and union supporter who made friends easily. He was handy and built an addition on his South Portland house himself. A proponent of education who had missed such opportunities himself, George treasured his children’s and grandchildren’s educations.

George’s family wishes to thank the caring staff of the German Centre in West Roxbury and family friend Elaine Spellman.
