Obituary



David W. Swindells, 85, of Westport, died Sunday, July 31, 2016 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Sarah (Jones) Swindells to whom he was married for 61 years. He was the son of the late Alexander and Grace (Arnoe) Swindells.

Born in Fall River, Mr. Swindells graduated from B.M.C. Durfee High School, Class of 1949, where he played on the football team. He received a degree in economics from Colby College in Waterville, ME with Phi Beta Cappa Honors, and a Master of Science in labor relations from Cornell University. During the Korean War, Mr. Swindells served as a communications officer aboard the destroyer USS Power.

During a career of more than thirty years in labor relations, he worked for a number of companies including Westinghouse, The Okonite Company, Crane Company and the Bairnco Corporation. Prior to his retirement in 1994, he had been Vice President of Labor Relations for the Bairnco Corporation, headquartered in New York City. Mr. Swindells was a member of the American Legion, Post 145, Westport. He enjoyed sailing playing golf, teaching English and reading History. Before moving to Westport, he lived with his family for many years in Ridgewood, NJ.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Deborah Donovan and Cynthia Russell, along with his son-in-law, Gerard Russell, all of Westport.

Funeral service to which relatives and friends are invited will be Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at POTTER FUNERAL HOME, 81 Reed Road, Westport at 11:00 A.M.

Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Tiverton, RI.

Calling Hours Tuesday 4-7 P.M.
