Augusta, GA - On July 28, 2016 we lost another member of the “Greatest Generation” with the passing of George A. Reese.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 5, 2016. Interment with full military honors to follow at Westover Memorial Park.
Born on October 28, 1921 in Mahanoy City, PA, the son of the late Arnold Reese and Marie Mokelar Reese. George enlisted in the Army and met his wife of 67 years, the late Marjorie Wiggins while stationed at Camp Gordon, GA. He served in the European Theater during WWII, landing on Utah Beach, on D-Day, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He retired from the US Army and they made a home in Alexandria, VA where they raised 5 children. George worked for DC General Hospital in administration until retiring in 1979 and moving back to Augusta. He was a member of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church.
George was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie Wiggins, a daughter, Cathy McAree, siblings Anna Paulaconis, May Wisler, Catherine Kane, and John Reese. He is survived by sisters, Marie Hama and Helen Marstellar, children, Marjorie Leake, Arnold Reese, Gloria Leibbrand, Dennis (Tony) Reese, and 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be made to a military or Catholic charity or St. Teresa of Avila.
