Maria A. (Silva) Afonso, 91, of Hudson, died on Thursday, July 28th at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester. She was the beloved wife of the late Manuel Afonso who died in 1998.
Maria was born and raised in Sao Miguel, the Azores of Portugal, daughter of the late Jose and Maria (Raposo) Silva. She emigrated to Hudson in 1975 and was a long time employee of the Thomas Taylor and Son’s Co. in Hudson. She later was employed at the Hudson Lock Co. until her retirement. She was a member of Saint Michael’s Parish in Hudson.
Maria enjoyed crochet and knitting in her spare time but truly cherished being surrounded by her family. Her grandchildren and later her great grandchildren were very special in her life and she was instrumental in the care and raising of them. She was adored by all who loved her and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her four children, Maria Seymour and her husband Philip of Hudson, Jose Afonso of Hudson and his former wife Anebela, Mario Afonso and his wife Piedade of Milford and Olga Costa and her husband Antonio of Toronto, Canada. She was predeceased by her son, John Afonso in 1976. She also leaves her sister, Madalena Medeiros of Hudson; her loving 10 grandchildren; adoring 6 great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by five siblings.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday Aug. 1st at 9:00 a.m. in Saint Michael’s Church, 21 Manning Street, Hudson. Burial will follow at Saint Michael’s Cemetery, Hudson.
