Walter A. Finneran, age 89, a 55-year resident of Winchester, passed away on July 26, 2016. He was the beloved husband of Yolande (Chouinard) Finneran.
Born in Worcester, Walter was the son of the late Walter J. and Margaret Mary (Fenderson) Finneran. Mr. Finneran was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, and he subsequently graduated with his B.S. from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and with a Master’s Degree from Northeastern University. He was a chemical and electrical engineer with Polaroid for many years.
Walter was active in the Winchester community, volunteering with many clubs and organizations, including as an active member of Winchester Town Meeting and the Boy Scouts, where he was a Scout Master. An avid photographer, he enjoyed membership with the Arthur Griffin Museum in Winchester.
Mr. Finneran was a deeply religious man, and volunteered his time with prison ministries. In his spare time, he was a ham radio enthusiast and was a past president of the Instrument Society of America.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Finneran is survived by his children: Marc Finneran and his wife Jasna of Lexington, John Finneran and his wife Bonnie of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Mary Margaret Finneran of Gaithersburg, MD, Denise Finneran of Oklahoma City, OK and Catherine Finneran and her husband Michael Healy of Waltham. He was also the dear brother of the late Virginia Lawler and Dolores Thorman, and is further survived by seven grandchildren. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather at Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester, on Friday, July 29 from 4-8PM and again on Sat. at 10AM followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Eulalia’s Church, 50 Ridge St., Winchester, MA 01890 at 11AM. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Eulalia’s Church at the address above or to the Winchester Seniors Assoc., payable to the WSA Trust, 109 Skillings Rd., Winchester, MA 01890.
