Maria G. (Chagaruly) Nanopoulos of New Bedford died on Saturday July 23, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. She passed peacefully after a full life of 98 years. She was the wife of the late Nicholas T. Nanopoulos.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late George and Katherine (Foundas) Chagaruly, she lived in New Bedford for most of her life.
She was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society.
Mrs. Nanopoulos was formerly employed as a stitcher at Bristol Clothing. She later worked as a lunch aide at the Ottiwell School and as a poll worker for the City of New Bedford.
The joy of her life was babysitting for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by two children, Elaine Safioleas and Nicholas Nanopoulos; two sisters, Demetra "Dee" Yotides and her husband Thomas, and Selestia Pechonis; two grandchildren, Bryan Safioleas and his wife Diane, and Kelly Gomes and her husband Scott; six great-grandchildren, Nikolas Safioleas, Ashlyn Carmo and her fiancé Jay Teixeira, Cody Carmo, Mason, Elijah, and Landon Gomes; two great-great-grandchildren, Jaiden and Tysen Teixeira; her brother-in-law, Constantine Nanopoulos and his wife Grace; her Godchildren, Paras Traganos and Kim DeRossi Walecka; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was the sister of the late Theodora George, Evangeline Baptiste, Helen Caradimos, and Constantine Chagaruly.
The family would like to extend special thanks to her caregiver, Ana Perez of Overlook Care at Home, Eileen Harding of Senior Whole Health, and Community Nurse Home Care, for their loving care, and to the many family and friends for their kind gestures shown to Maria.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday July 27, 2016 at 10 AM at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 186 Cross Rd., Dartmouth. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 4-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
