James Leroy Lewis
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Sunday, July 17, 2016, Mr. James Leroy Lewis, 92, husband of Mrs. Magdalena “Maggie” Lewis.
Mr. Lewis, a member of the Greatest Generation, was born in Magnolia, KY and grew up during the Great Depression. Going to work at 15 as a lumberjack, he worked hard his whole life. A resident of Augusta since 1964, he retired from the United States Army after 26 years of service that included overseas assignments in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Following retirement, he worked for University Hospital and the VA Hospital. Never one to sit still, he loved to fish and garden – often saying he didn’t know how he had time to work with all that he had to do during retirement. Mr. Lewis was a 50-year Mason.
Family members include his wife: Magdalena “Maggie” Lewis; daughter: Mary Hood and husband Dale; son: Richard C. Lewis and wife Mary; sister: Judy Brown; 10 grandchildren: Christopher Miller, Traci Duffie, Jeffery Miller, Heather Hargrove, Michael Miller, Austin Smallwood, Spenser Lewis, Nathan Lewis, Bryan Smallwood and Stephen Hood; 7 great grandchildren; and niece and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Friday, July 22, 2016, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church with Dr. Joe Bowden officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at a reception in the church fellowship hall.
