Dorothy C. (Craven) Hunter, age 93, formerly of Brockton, died July 14, 2016 at the Masonicare at Newtown, Newtown CT. Dorothy was the wife of the late Franklin C. Hunter. She was born in Philmont PA, daughter of the late Jesse B. and Anna E. (Bright) Craven.
Dorothy was raised and educated in Langhorne, Pennsylvania and moved to Massachusetts after WWII. She was a longtime resident of Brockton, having moved to her home in 1963.
She volunteered for the Red Cross, and was an active member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. Dorothy worked for Knapp Shoe Company on West Chestnut Street in Human Resource as Director of Employee Benefits until the company closed, at which time she retired.
Following her husband’s death in 1986, she continued his volunteer work for BAArc on the Human Rights Committee and subsequently served on the Board of Directors until she became ill in October 2015. She loved children, and was a magnet to them wherever she went. Dorothy was an avid reader, as well as a gifted painter whose watercolors adorn the homes of family and friends.
Dorothy is survived by her two daughters Michelle L. MacRae and her husband Gary of Newtown, CT and Cheryl W. Kierstead of Rothesay, New Brunswick, Canada; her sister Beryl Solis and her husband William of Holland, PA; four grandchildren Jessica M.( Joseph) Sousa, Darien B.(Josiah)Grover, Courtney H. (Christopher)Papallo, Adam C. (Barbara) Kierstead; five great grandchildren Emily and Kayla Sousa, William, Samuel and Abigail Grover and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Ethel Graham and Ruth Coffey, and her brothers Clarence, Charles, Arthur, Wilbur and Lester Craven.
Visitation will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte. 123) Brockton, Friday July 22, from 10-11 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial to follow in Pine Hill Cemetery West Bridgewater.
