BEVERLY – Thiophilos “Ted” Andrada, 84, beloved husband of the late Jacqueline (White) Andrada and devoted father and grandfather passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, July 15, 2016, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Ted was born to the late Henrique and Maria Andrade on April 21, 1932, in Peabody, MA and graduated from Peabody High School in 1949. He went on to earn an Associate’s Degree in Mechanical Design from Franklin Technical Institute in Boston before joining General Electric.
In 1952, Ted began a distinguished 28-year military career in the United States Air Force, where he rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel and served three years in the Vietnam War as a Master Navigator, often in combat situations. His time with the Air Force saw the birth of his three children, the earning of a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Oklahoma State University, traveling across the country and world, and the earning of several military honors: the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal with 7 Oak Clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Medal, and the Combat Readiness Medal.
Ted’s time in the military came to a close in 1981, after he had moved to Beverly and worked for a time at Hanscom Air Force Base. He and his wife enjoyed a wonderful retirement that included travel, winters in Pensacola and Plant City, Fla., and time with their children and grandchildren.
Among Ted’s many interests was golf. He was especially proud of his hole-in-one on the 14th hole at Bass Rocks Golf Club in Gloucester, where he and his wife were members. Ted also enjoyed travel and was particularly proud of his Portuguese heritage, and in 2015 was able to visit Portugal with his entire family which included a stop at his parents’ birthplace of Gouveia in Portugal’s wine country.
In addition to his late wife, Ted is survived by two sons, Steven Andrada and his partner, Karen Angelo, and Bryan Andrada and his wife, Donna; his daughter, Marjorie Barnes and her husband, Stephen; three grandchildren, Kristen Andrada and her fiancé, Conor Walsh, Zachary Andrada and Nicholas Andrada, and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his granddaughter, Carlee Andrada, and his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Nancy Andrade.
His memorial service will be held on Monday in the Second Congregational Church, 35 Conant St., Beverly at 11am. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot Street, Beverly from 2 – 5 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
