Gertrude Delgado 87, of Clinton St. died July 9, 2016 at Oakland Grove Health Care Center. Born in Harwich, MA, She was a daughter of the late Ayres and Anna (Lopes) Fortes. Gert was a baker and the owner of the former Gert’s Sweet Shop for many years. Gert used her love of baking to help others, and became known as the “Cookie Lady” she sent hundreds of boxes of cookies to the troops in Afghanistan. She made cookies and volunteered for Toys For Tots for over ten years. At Christmas time, she sold lollipops that she made and donated the money to Because He Lives Ministry. She organized several fund raisers for people who were ill or in need. She was an active member and volunteer at St. Joseph’s parish, she taught Catechism, participated in the Feast of St. Joseph making all of the zeppole, and helped with the decorating. She was an honorary member of The Girl Scouts and a member of the 20/20 Club. Gert loved playing bingo. She belonged to a local bowling league where she was known as “Bozo”. Gert was an avid collector of anything Mickey Mouse!
She is survived by two daughters, Frances Delgado of Mashpee, MA; and Pamela Delgado-Sequeira of Wareham, MA; three sons Vincent Delgado of Indian Orchard, MA; Samuel Delgado of Tauton, MA; and Frank Delgado Jr. and his wife Lynne of Assonet, MA; a sister Elizabeth Thomas of Roxbury, MA; her best friend and roommate of 41 years Janet Gervais; six grandchildren, and six great- grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by seven siblings.
Her funeral will be held Thursday at 10:00 AM from the Fournier & Fournier Funeral Home, 99 Cumberland St. Woonsocket, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM in St. Joseph’s Church, Mendon Rd. Woonsocket. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery in Barnstable, MA will be held at a later date. Visiting hours are Wednesday 4-7 PM. In lieu of flowers donations to The Walter Reed Society, 8901 Wisconsin Ave. #303, Bethesda, MD 20889-5600 or Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, Gift Processing Administrator, 18251 Quantico Gateway Dr., Triangle, VA 22172 in her memory would be appreciated.
