David A. McGuire, Sr. of Natick, formerly of Needham and South Boston, died July 9, 2016 after a sudden illness. Born in Boston he was the son of the late Francis X. and Margaret (O'Leary) McGuire. He was the beloved husband of Diane M. (Antonellis) McGuire sharing 50 years of marriage. Devoted father of Kathleen “Kate” McGuire and her husband Paul Crook of Dorchester, David A. McGuire, Jr and his wife Richelle of Avon, Elizabeth McGuire of Brighton, Maureen Kaplan and her husband Jonathan of Natick, dear brother of Francis McGuire and his wife Marion of Yuma AZ, John McGuire and his wife Maureen of Melrose, Judith Duffy of South Boston, Susan Gailunas and her husband Peter of South Boston, cherished grandfather of Benjamin and Ryan Kaplan, Veronica and Conor McGuire, and step-grandfather of Katelynn and Devon Crook. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters in law. He was also the brother in law of the late Joseph Duffy.
Mr. McGuire was a dedicated teacher for 33 years. He began his teaching career in the Boston School System, later in the Town of Maynard, and then to the Town of Needham where he was the Media Specialist for 25 years. Mr. McGuire was also coach of the Needham High School Boy and Girl’s swim teams.
His passions include directing, acting and singing. Over the years, he directed many Needham High School musical productions, as well as the St. Joseph’s (of Needham) and St. Brendan’s (of Dorchester) variety shows. He was a talented singer and actor, and performed in many Needham Community Theater productions, and with the Reagle Players of Waltham. In more recent years, he sang with three choirs: the Needham Retired Men’s Choir, St Linus’ Church Choir in Natick, and the multi-generational choir Sound and Spirit in Natick, where he performed with one of his daughters and two of his grandsons.
Another passion was mentoring under-privileged kids. He worked many summers as the waterfront director at Agassiz Village in Poland, Maine, which provides recreation, learning and leadership opportunities for inner city youth. He later became a longtime member on the Board of Trustees for Agassiz Village.
He also worked many years as Waterfront Director at the Lake Waban Swim Club in Wellesley.
Mr. McGuire enjoyed life and cherished his relationships with family, friends and students. Many consider him to be a second father.
Visiting hours are Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the John Everett and Sons Funeral Home 4 Park Street, at Natick Common. Relatives and friends are also invited to attend the funeral on Thursday, July 14 at 11:00 A.M., a Mass of Christian Burial in St Linus Church (procession starting from the John Everett and Sons Funeral Home at 10:00 AM). Burial at the Newton Cemetery.
