SHERBORN: Joan Voorhees Lovell, 80, of Sherborn, peacefully passed away at home on Tuesday, May 24, 2016, surrounded by family.
She is survived by her loving husband John Winsor Lovell; daughter Susan Lovell;, son Peter Lovell, his wife Kaitlin and their son Spencer; and her sisters Helen Quodomine and Ann Hanneken. She was preceded in death by her sister Lou Burgess.
Born in Rochester, NY, and raised in Pittsford, NY, Joan received her B.S. from Hood College in 1957. After graduation, she moved to Boston to work at Harvard Medical School with Drs. Murray and Moore who performed the first successful human kidney transplants in the 1950’s and 60’s. In 1970, she met John and they married in 1972 before settling in Sherborn in 1975.
Joan was an active member of the Dover-Sherborn community. She served as a leader for Cub Scouts and Campfire, was heavily involved in the Friends of Music and Sherborn Swim Team, and volunteered much of her time with local schools, the Council on Aging, and Pilgrim Church. Joan was an avid quilter, knitter, and embroiderer who taught and created many quilting and sewing projects with students at Pine Hill School and the Life Experience School.
She was probably happiest with a spool of thread in one hand, needle in the other, and quilt draped over her lap.
All are welcome to attend her memorial service at Pilgrim Church, 25 South Main Street, Sherborn, on Saturday, July 16th at 10 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to the Joslin Diabetes Center for type 1 research (http://www.joslin.org/giving/ways_to_give.html).
