Obituary

Glassman, Bernard,age 100, beloved husband of the late Minnie (Michaels) Glassman died July 1st, at the Whidden Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Chelsea, he was the devoted son of the late Joseph & Fannie (Freedman) Glassman & brother of the late Louise & Max. A graduate of Chelsea High School, Class of 1934, he served honorably during World War 2, landing D-Day June 6th, 1944 & worked as chef to General Eisenhower & the command staff of the European Theatre. He returned to work in the Boston area with his wife Minnie as owner & of Bernie's Delicatessen in Malden & the Parkway Sandwich Shop in Everett. After that he held a number of jobs selling food & goods around Boston working well into his late 80's. He was a 60 year resident of Everett & then the Jack Satter House in Revere for 14 years, working in the café as a volunteer. He spent the last 2 years of his life at the Cohen Florence Levine Estates in Chelsea. He had been a lifelong member of Congregation Tifereth Israel in Everett. On March 28 of this year he celebrated his 100th birthday with 100 friends & relatives & letters of congratulations from notables including Danny Ainge, Governor Charlie Baker, & President Barak Obama. He is survived by his daughters Randy Glassman & her husband Paul Summergrad of Newton, Audrey Emmer & her husband Neal of Carlisle, & his grandchildren Sawyer Emmer & his wife Molly, Sophie Summergrad, & Michael Summergrad. Funeral service will be at the Torf Funeral Chapel 151 Washington Ave., Chelsea, Tuesday July 5th at 2PM, followed by interment in The New Tifereth Israel Cemetery, Fuller Street, Everett. Memorial observation (Shiva) to be held following burial at the home of Randy Glassman, Newton till 830PM Additional times in Newton will be Wednesday & Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30PM. Memorial observance will also be held at Bernard's residence, 201 Captain's Row, Chelsea on Wednesday from 2:00-3:30 pm.
