Mary “Priscilla” (Halligan) Hughes 77, a 55 year resident of Brockton, died June 27, 2016 following a courageous battle with CJD.
She had been the wife of the late Paul G. Hughes for 31 years before his passing in 1988; missing him every day. Priscilla was born and raised in Allston and was the daughter of the late James F. and Virginia S. (Doucette) Halligan.
She was a 1956 graduate of St Columbkills High School in Brighton and a member of the Drill Team. Much later in 1997 she would graduate from Massasoit Community College.
Priscilla worked more than 25 years in the admissions department of Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital and 8 more at Community Rehab Care before retiring in 2010 to spend more time with her family.
She was a devout catholic who shared her faith as a volunteer at St. Joseph’s Manor Brockton, where she passed on Monday eased by their loving care; as a CCD teacher and coordinator for many years at Christ the King Parish formerly St. Colman’s Church and as a Eucharistic Minister in her parish and surrounding area nursing homes. Her faith however was not more evident than in her own loving family she so adored and who gave her so much joy and pride. She was ever the supportive fan for her kids and grandchildren through their sports, plays and school events.
Music was huge in her life and for many years sang in the church choir, minstrel shows and the many family parties, encouraging all to sing along.
She will be remembered as a graceful lady with an infectious laugh, her kind, loving and giving nature who always placed others first and was happy to do so.
Priscilla is survived by her children; Paul Hughes and his wife Barbara of Brockton, Linda Joyce and her significant other James of Raynham, Laurie Hancock and her husband Martin of Stoughton and Donna McNutt and her husband Joseph of Weymouth; brother William Halligan of CT; 12 grandchildren, Paul and Brian Hughes, Kerrin Sears, Kevin and Danielle Joyce, Christina and Matthew DeIorio, Joseph and Julie McNutt and David, Jay and Dailey Hancock; 5 great grandchildren, 24 nieces and nephews along with many cousins and wonderful friends. She was also the sister of the late Catherine “Kay” Cassidy, James Halligan and Virginia MacLean.
Visiting hours are Tuesday July 5, 2016 4-8pm in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (Rte. 123) Brockton. A procession will form at the funeral home Wednesday at 8 am for a funeral mass to be celebrated in Christ the King Church at 9 am. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Roxbury.
