Obituary

Mary V. (Donahue) Schlemmer, 92, of Smithfield died Friday in her home surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late John D. Schlemmer.

Born in Medford, MA, a daughter of the late James P. and Anna C. (Grady) Donahue. She had lived in Smithfield her whole life. She had served with the American Red Cross Motor Corps for ten years during and after WWII. Mary was the first woman to obtain a motor cycle license in the State of RI.

She had graduated from the former St. Xavier Academy having been a member of their basketball and track teams and their Alumni Society. She was an avid New England Sports Fan. She enjoyed gardening in her yard, bowling and bird watching. She was a lifetime communicant of St. Philip Church and a former member of the St. Philip Ladies Sodality.

She was a mother to seven children, John P. Schlemmer and his wife Cynthia of Center Habour, NH, Mary C. Della Torre and David J. Schlemmer and his wife Suzanne all of Burrillville, Virginia M. Schlemmer-Lavoie and her husband Henri, Ann M. Leach and her husband George, Alice M. Schlemmer, Theresa A. Garlacy and her husband Ted with whom she lived all of Smithfield, grandmother to nine and great-grandmother to 7. She was the sister of the late Paul G. and James P. Donahue, Kathleen T., Mary, John H. and Leo Connor.

Her funeral will be held Tuesday at 8:30am from the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Route 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. A Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Smithfield.
