Obituary

William F. Onofrey, 87, of New Bedford died Friday June 24, 2016 at Brandon Woods of New Bedford after a long illness. He was the husband of Doris A. (Dube) Onofrey.

Born in Whitaker, Pennsylvania, the son of the late George and Mary Onofrey, he lived in New Bedford for the past 66 years.

He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.

Mr. Onofrey was formerly employed as a header operator for Pilgrim Screw Company and Continental Screw Company.

During World War II and the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Nipmuc in various areas of the world, including traveling to the South Pole.

He loved gardening.

The family would like to extended sincere thanks to the staff of Brandon Woods of New Bedford for the excellent care given to Bill during his illness.

Survivors include his wife; five children, Dennis M. Onofrey, Kevin D. Onofrey, Vanessa M. Nobles and her husband Daryle, and Gordon J. Onofrey, all of New Bedford, and Douglas W.S. Onofrey and his wife Lisa of Dartmouth; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was the father of the late William G. and Kenneth P. Onofrey.

His funeral will be held on Monday at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 9 AM. Burial with military honors will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Sunday from 4-7 PM.
