Obituary

LACONIA - George A. Clemow, 98, of Laconia, NH, formally of Moultonborough and Lexington, MA., passed away June 16, 2016.

George was born in Billings, MT to the late Thomas P. and Grace E.(Wharton) Clemow. He attended Montana State College in Bozeman, MT, now Montana State University, and graduated in 1940 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He began graduate study at MIT and after a first year of study he was called up to the Army to serve his ROTC commission just ahead of the outbreak of WW2. He was sent to Little Rock, AR to establish an ordnance plant. There he met and married the love of his life, his late wife Cherry Allis Clemow. They would have a loving and beautiful 53-year marriage before she passed away in 1995.

During the Second World War, George was posted to the Pentagon in Washington where he used his engineering skills in designing artillery shells and other munitions, working between the Pentagon and the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in MD . It was during this time when his son, Allan, was born. After the war he continued his engineering career, first with Linde Air in Buffalo, NY, then moving to the Boston area, where George worked at Commercial Filters, Infa Roast, and the MIT Flight Control Lab. It was in Cambridge, MA where George and Cherry added to their family when their daughter Susan was born. In 1955 he joined General Radio, a company designing and manufacturing electronic test equipment and spent 28 years in their employ, retiring as manager of the integrated circuit manufacturing operation.

Upon retirement, George and Cherry moved to Moultonborough, NH on the shores of Lake Kanasatka. But George did not retire his engineering skills. He began a 26 year career volunteering at Lakes Region General Hospital in the Biomedical Engineering Department, assisting in calibration and repair of hospital equipment.

In 2013 he was honored with the Rhoda Ladd Award from LRGH for his volunteer activities. George was a man who enjoyed all things technical and truly wanted to use his talents to help others. Another part of his life was his commitment to his faith and he was a member of local churches in all of the places he lived. Over the years he served on many committees and faith based projects and at his passing was a member of the Congregation Church of Laconia. Another joy of his was travel and it seemed he always had a bag packed for another adventure.

George leaves his son Allan, and a daughter Susan Richardson and her husband Glenn Richardson, all of Laconia, and a beloved cousin, Lauree McKeown, of San Diego, CA, and an array of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at the Congregational Church of Laconia, 69 Pleasant Street, Laconia.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, the family suggests that donations may be made in his name to the Congregational Church of Laconia, 18 Veterans Square, Laconia, NH 03246.
