Thomas Austin Tarpey died Friday, June 3, 2016 at the Overlook Community where he was a member since 2007.
Born in Cambridge on May 6, 1920, Tom was the husband of the late Anita Muchmore.
He is survived by his sons; Thomas A. Tarpey and his wife CC King of Concord, Sean B. Tarpey and his wife Elizabeth Pols of Belchertown, Dennis Tarpey of Northampton, and grandsons; Matthew Pols Tarpey and Clement Austin Tarpey. He was predeceased by his former wife, Virginia (Buckley) Tarpey who died in 2004 and his son, Joseph G. Tarpey who died in 2005. He leaves his brothers; John Tarpey of Carver, Frank Tarpey of Dedham, Jim Tarpey of Wakefield, and Robert Tarpey of Braintree. He was predeceasedby his siblings; Joseph Tarpey, Mary M. Mahoney, Eileen Woods, and Richard Tarpey. Tom grew up in Brighton and served in the Army Air Corps, during WWII, worked at Watertown Arsenal before getting an engineering degree at Northeastern University and worked as an engineer for many years. An avid sailor and player of tennis and pool, he especially enjoyed introducing others to the joys of these pursuits, An enthusiastic member of the Overlook Community, he was well known there for organizing tournaments both on the tennis court and in the billiards room. A strong believer in the maxim “We don’t stop playing because we get old, we get old because we stop playing”, Tom, recently, took wry pleasure in displaying the “1st in Age Class” trophy his race car had won, in the Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby, run at the Overlook, in March of this year.
A Remembrance Gathering will be held at 4PM, Sunday, June 19, in the Great Room of the Overlook Community Home, 88 Masonic Home Rd., Charlton. Signs at the main entrance will direct you to the Great Room.
There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Heifer International Fund or the charity of your choice.
The Robert J. Miller-Charlton Funeral Home, 175 Old Worcester Rd., is assisting the Tarpey family with arrangements.
