Oliver Thomas “Tom” Newcomb, Jr., 80, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2016.
Tom was born in Campbellsville, KY, on February 6, 1936, to Susie St. Clair Newcomb and Oliver Thomas Newcomb, Sr. He graduated from Ahrens Trade High School in 1954 and served in the Army stationed in Ft. Sill, OK, from 1958-1960. From 1961–1977, Tom worked as a linotype operator. From 1978-1998, he worked as a precision machinist at S&S Tool and Machine Company. Tom retired in 1998.
Tom was an active member and deacon of the Beechland Baptist Church and previously of the Valley Station Baptist Church and the Calvary Baptist Church of Louisville, KY. He was also a member of the Shawnee Lodge No. 830, F. & A. M. Tom most enjoyed his lifelong hobbies of gardening, coaching his sons’ baseball and basketball teams (especially the Prairie Village “Giants”), fishing and watching many athletic and musical performances by his grandchildren. Tom taught us all the value of family, personal hard work and the importance of education. Most of all, Tom taught us to love God and each other. We love and miss him.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha Roth Newcomb; children: Susan (Jim) Newcomb Crumpler, Oliver Thomas (Sarah) Newcomb, III, M.D., Mark David (Deborah, D.V.M.) Newcomb, Ph.D. and Marti Leigh (John) Newcomb-Thompson; 11 grandchildren: Amy (Tim), J.J., Tom (Melanie), IV, M.D., Paul, Carrie, Joe, Katie, Mark, Jr., Kenzie, Grace and Scotty; 1 great-granddaughter, Audrey; 2 sisters-in-law: Diane Beliles and Woodilea (Henry) Morgan; and numerous other beloved family.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway with burial in Louisville Memorial Gardens West.
Visitation will be from 2 – 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
