Robert E. Oliver, 92, passed away Friday June 3rd at Pleasant Bay Nursing Home in Brewster, with family by his side. His wife of 65 years, Dorothy (Kelly) Oliver died in 2012.
Born and educated in Provincetown, he joined the Navy at the outbreak of WW II. He was stationed in the Pacific on the submarine tender USS Euryale. After leaving the Navy he worked in Boston and met the love of his life, Dorothy Kelly. They married and moved back to Provincetown where he fished on the F/V Aerolite until it went aground.
He then joined the US Coast Guard where served until retirement. He once patrolled the waters off of the Kennedy compound on security duty. After leaving the Coast Guard, he went to work for Cape Cod Oil. His favorite job was working on the wharf pumping gas for all the boats in the harbor. He met people from all over the world. He continued to do this job until he was in his mid-80's.
An avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching his son and his grandchildren play high school sports. Later in life he became interested in the UConn girls basketball team. He never missed a game. He was also a Patriots fan and a member of the Louis Young Post, VFW.
He enjoyed spending time with his great grandchildren and his family and friends. He will be remembered as a devoted husband and father and a loyal friend to those he was close to. He was also an animal lover who had many dogs and cats during his lifetime.
He leaves behind his son David Oliver and wife Kirsten of Truro, his daughter Roberta Oliver of Provincetown, granddaughter Katie Bradford and her husband Scott Bradford and grandson Adam Oliver and his wife Katy Oliver. Great grandchildren Cole and Chase Bradford and Addison and Sienna Oliver, as well as his dog Pugsly also survive him. He is predeceased by his wife Dorothy Oliver, his mother Mary Agnus Oliver, and his brother Franklin Oliver.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, Thursday, June 9, 2016 at St Peter the Apostle Church, Prince Street, Provincetown. Burial with Military Honors will follow at St. Peters Cemetery.
