Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Mary Elizabeth (Armstrong) O’Connor, strolled confidently to her Heavenly Home on Friday, May 27, 2016. She was a lifelong resident of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield and a communicant of the former Our Lady of Hope Church and a member of the Our Lady of Hope Women’s Guild. Mary was a 42 year employee of the Glenwood School where she worked until the age of 77. Mary had three priorities in life - serving God, loving her family and nurturing all children. She was a devoted daughter to Robert and Mary Armstrong, a caring sister to the late Margaret Lyon and Irene Levesque and the loving wife of the late James “Unc” O’Connor. Mary had a passion for reading and was a frequent visitor to the Liberty Branch Library. She shared her love of books with her children and grandchildren, teaching them to read even before they began attending school. She was active in local elections and enjoyed “working the polls” to support her favorite Democratic candidates. Healthy and independent, she could often be seen walking or riding her bicycle in the neighborhood. Mary loved to knit and crochet, making hundreds of mittens, sweaters, and blankets that warmed scores of children through the years. Mary will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all, especially her loving children, Nancy Sullivan and her husband, Patrick, of Springfield, Jim of Springfield, and Bob and his wife, Barbara, of Hadley. Also left to cherish her memory are grandsons, Joe, Kevin and Bob, along with granddaughters, Meghan, Mary Kate, and Molly, (her Colleens). Mary also leaves many nieces, nephews and godchildren whom she loved dearly. Mary’s family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at Mount Saint Vincent and her special caregivers, Sallie Baldwin and Gracie Siano. In accordance with Mary’s wishes, there will be no visiting hours. A Liturgy celebrating Mary’s life will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 11 a.m. in Holy Name Church, 323 Dickinson Street, Springfield, MA 01108. Her burial will be private at the convenience of her family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mary’s favorite charity, the Sisters of Saint Joseph Retirement Fund, 577 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104. www.ssjspringfield.org. Her arrangements have been entrusted to the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01104. For more details, please visit: www.stpierrephaneuf.com
