Obituary

CHICOPEE – Cecile M. (Fontaine) Benoit, 91, of the Fairhaven Apartments at 400 Britton Street in the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Friday, May 27, 2016. She passed into Eternal Life at Wingate at South Hadley surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was born at home on Franklin Street in Holyoke on August 6, 1924, a beloved daughter of the late Henri J. and Mary Anna (Lacroix) Fontaine. She was raised in Holyoke, graduated from the former Marie Rivier High School in Hudson, New Hampshire and lived in Holyoke for many years before moving to South Hadley in 1952. In 1996, Cecile moved to the Fairview section of Chicopee where she lived for the remainder of her life. She was last employed at the former Magazine Press and had previously worked at the former National Blank Book Company, both in Holyoke. She was a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Fairview. She was a member of the Fairhaven Social Club and the Fairview Golden Age Club. Cecile enjoyed knitting, crocheting and keeping tabs on the Boston Red Sox. She enjoyed bingo and liked to meet up with her many friends at the weekly bingo game at the Fairview Council 4044 Knights of Columbus. Most of all, she was a wonderful homemaker to her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, A. Roger Benoit who was Called Home on June 18, 1987. They were married on June 15, 1946 at the former Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Holyoke and were blessed with 41 years of happiness together. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her loving son, William Benoit who was Called Home on May 6, 2002; and her loving son-in-law, Brian Bender who was Called Home on October 3, 2007. She leaves her loving children, Robert R. “Bob” Benoit and his wife, Tzumay “AiAi”, of Vacaville, CA, Bernard H. “Barney” Benoit of Bondsville and Elizabeth M. “Betsy” Bender of Chicopee; her loving daughter-in-law, Carol Benoit of Chicopee; her seven cherished grandchildren, Christopher Benoit and his wife, Kerry, of Holyoke, JW Benoit and his wife, Allison, of Belchertown, Matthew Benoit and his wife, Candace, of South Hadley, Arthur Benoit and his wife, Danielle, of Sacramento, CA, Vivian Douglas and her husband, Randy, of Vacaville, CA, Michael Benoit and his wife, Jennifer, of North Adams and Kevin Benoit of Chicopee; her 13 cherished great-grandchildren; her loving sister, Marie A. Rock of Alamagordo, NM; her two loving brothers, Roger L. Fontaine of Chicopee and Henry J. Fontaine and his wife, Cecile, of Lake Placid, FL; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Benoit and Fontaine families. Her funeral will be held on Thursday morning , June 2, 2016 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her burial will follow the Mass at Notre Dame Cemetery, 63 Lyman Street, South Hadley, MA 01075. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home.
