SPRINGFIELD – Edward D. “Rocky” Kenney, Sr., of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Monday, May 23, 2016. He passed into Eternal Life at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield on September 22, 1929, a beloved son of the late Frank J. and Lena M. (Fraro) Kenney. He was raised on Hungry Hill in Springfield, graduated from the Glenwood Elementary School and the former Springfield Trade High School and was a lifelong resident of Hungry Hill. During his younger years, he was employed at the former Handy Meats in Springfield and also played for the Acorns and the Blackstone’s Van Horn Park football teams. Rocky received an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Springfield Technical Community College and was employed for 28 years as a Police Officer for the City of Springfield. Following his retirement, he worked as a security guard while Monarch Place was being constructed. He was a former member of the John Boyle O’Reilly Club in Springfield and the Tiger’s Athletic Club in Chicopee Falls. He was a member of the Massachusetts Police Association, and the Marconi Club and the Bottle Park Society, both in Springfield. He was a communicant of the former Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield. Following the closing of his beloved church, he became a communicant of Mary, Mother of Hope Church in East Springfield. He was predeceased by his two beloved wives, Mae Rose (Prenderville) Kenney and Louise M. (Joseph) Kenney; his loving daughter and son-in-law, Judy Capeless and her husband, William Capeless; his dear brothers, Francis, Thomas and John Kenney; and his dear sister, Anna Griffin. He leaves his loving children, Donna M. Rossini and her husband, Ronald, of Springfield, Edward D. Kenney, Jr. and his wife, Alisa, of Westerly, RI and Frank J. Kenney and his wife, Kim, of Springfield; his ten cherished grandchildren, Laura Bourque and her husband, Thomas, William Capeless, Jr. and his wife, Kirsten, Nicole Capeless and her fiancé, Todd Rioux, Tiffany Bricker and her husband, Kevin, Robin Rossini, Raymond Rossini and his wife, Vanessa, Nicholas Kenney, Luke Kenney, Allyssa Kenney and Matthew Kenney; his fourteen cherished great-grandchildren; his loving brother-in-law and best friend, Victor Joseph of Agawam; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Kenney, Prenderville and Joseph families. His funeral will be held on Saturday morning, May 28, 2016 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Mary, Mother of Hope Church, 840 Page Boulevard, East Springfield, MA 01104. His burial will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, May 27, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, (Specify Springfield), 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
