Obituary


Mr. John J. Garvey III, of Medford formerly of Somerville passed away peacefully May 24, 2016 at the Massachusetts General Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was 68 years of age. He was the beloved husband of Lydia B. (Barrasso). Born in Medford he was one of three children of the late Florence M. (Rogers) and John J. Garvey Jr.
John was raised and educated in Somerville and was a member of Somerville High School's graduating class of 1965. Following high school he continued his education at Bentley College where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. Shortly following his graduation he secured a job with the Cantella & Co. Brokerage Firm of Boston and remained there for the next 45 years and retired in 2013 as Treasurer if the firm. Throughout his life, John enjoyed music and especially enjoyed music from the 1950's and 1960's. He loved sharing his love of music with friends and family and was always compiling CDs and playlists to give away. John was also a member of the Irish American Club of Malden. John's greatest joy was his family and he treasured every moment spent together. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his beloved wife, John is survived by his children; Melissa Jeffrey and her husband T.J. of Woburn, John M. Garvey of Medford, Jennifer Flynn and her husband James III of Medford. He was the loving grandfather of Cameron and Mia Jeffrey. Cherished brother of Robert Garvey and his wife Kathy of Melrose and Janet Garvey DiRusso of Medford. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., MEDFORD, Friday, May 27th, at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 441 Fellsway West, Medford, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Thursday 4 thru 8 p.m. Services will conclude with burial at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in John's memory to Merkel Cell Research, c/o Guilherme Rabinowits, M.D., Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Ave, Boston, MA 02215.
