Obituary

Alice Boyko, R.N., 83, a longtime resident of Methuen, passed away on Monday, May 23, 2016 at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, following a short illness.

Alice was born in Methuen, the daughter of the late H. Ignati and Stavia (Kuzavitch) Boyko. She attended Methuen schools, graduating from the Edward F. Searles High School, Class of 1951. Alice proudly attended Simmons College in Boston and was a graduate of the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1957. She dedicated nearly 30 years of her life to nursing at MGH in Boston, serving for many years as a Nursing Supervisor in the Baker Building. She was a passionate patient advocate and mentor.

Alice was truly devoted to her family, and through her compassion, generosity and humor, changed the lives of all who were privileged to know and love her. She was a consummate gardener, a gourmet cook and a master of cross-stitch. She is lovingly remembered for her “feisty” personality and will be dearly missed.

In the later years of her life, Alice committed to a regular exercise program in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Department at Holy Family Hospital, where she made many friends and grew to love both staff and fellow patients. She gained tremendous joy and satisfaction from her participation, and worked to “stay healthy” for her “grandkids” she so adored…Alexa, Alex and Abby.

She leaves behind her devoted friend and life partner of fifty years, Linda A. Thomas of Methuen, her niece Stephanie Boyko DiCenso of Methuen and nephews Stephen A. Boyko of North Andover, George Thomas of Dracut, Larry Boyko of Pelham, NH and Greg Boyko of Salem, NH. Alice is survived by her brother George Boyko of Salem, NH, and predeceased by her sister Edith MacDonald, brothers Alexander Boyko and John Boyko.

Family and friends are invited to gather at First Church Congregational, 26 Pleasant Street, Methuen, from 9 to 10 AM on Friday, May 27th. A Funeral Service will take place at 10 AM. Burial will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery in Methuen.

In life, Alice enjoyed gardening and the beauty of nature. Alice’s family requests that flowers be sent directly to the church in celebration of her life.
