Obituary


Peter P. Stonis, age 97, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 21, 2016. Born in Boston, Mr. Stonis grew up in Walpole, graduated from Walpole High School, Class of 1937 and lived in the town for 70 years. More recently a resident of Rockland, he previously had lived in Quincy for 24 years. He was a WW II Army veteran, a Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient, who served as a PFC with the BCO 182nd Infantry Americal Division. Mr. Stonis was retired from his position as an Operating Engineer with the Frank H. Davis Co. Cambridge. He was a former employee of Textron Co., the US Naval Air Station, Squantum, U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot, Hingham and the Boston Naval Shipyard, Charlestown. He was the past Co-founder and President of the Rockland Men’s Club, a Charter Member & Co-founder of the Quincy Chapter 79 D.A.V., a member of VFW 613, the Morrisette Post # 294, A.L., Quincy, the American Division Veterans Assn. Purple Heart, Guadalcanal, the Campaign Veterans South Pacific Buddies Assn., the Combat Infantry Mens Assn, NOTR 103, a Past CMDR of Quincy Veterans Council, a Past CMDR of District 2 DAV & 50 year member of the State Finance Committee. The beloved husband of the late Mary E. (Richards), he was the dear uncle of Lorraine T. Ahern of Rockland, Cheryl Richards and Douglas Richards, both of Waltham and the late Polly Reilly. Also survived by his grandnephew Ronald Reilly, Jr., of NH, grandniece Lisa Binzel & her husband Bill of VA and grandnephews, Ross Reilly of NV and Ryan Reilly, his wife Maria and their 5 children all of VA and Ronald Riley, Sr. of NH. Visiting hours at the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home, 326 Granite Ave., Milton, Wednesday 3 to 7 PM. A private burial with Military Honors will be held at the VA National Cemetery, Bourne. Relatives and friends invited to attend a collation at the Rockland Council on Aging, 317 Plain St., Rockland Saturday May 28th from 11 am to 3 pm. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to the Rockland Council on Aging, 317 Plain St., Rockland, MA 02370.
