Margaret M. “Margie” (McCarthy) Whalen age 78 of Brockton, died Monday May 16, 2016 at the Signature Healthcare/Brockton Hospital. She was the devoted wife of Martin J. Whalen, Jr. for 60 years. Margie was born and raised in Chelsea a daughter of the late John and Anne (McNeil) McCarthy and resided in Brockton for 48 years.
Margie was a 1955 graduate of St. Rose High School in Chelsea and was a stay at home mother devoted to her home and family. She was a longtime communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church where she had taught CCD and was a member of the Prayer Shawl Ministry. In her free time, Margie enjoyed playing bingo, trips to the casino, playing computer games and watching her favorite television programs. She loved animals and supported the MSPCA. Margie will be remembered as an outgoing and outspoken lady who was a loving wife and proud and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
In addition to her husband Martin, Margie is survived by her three children Debra A. Batson and her husband Joseph of Randolph; Martin J. Whalen III of South Boston and Kathleen M. Logue and her husband Robert of Cooperstown, NY. She leaves three cherished grandchildren Joanne Batson, Denise Batson and Faith Logue and two great grandchildren Lauren Conlon and Declyn Levins. Margie was the sister of John McCarthy of Lompoc, CA and sister-in-law of Marie Bevacqua, Lillian Smith, Helen Audette, John Whalen, Florence Higgins, William Whalen and his wife Vanessa, and Rita O’Connell. She was also a dear cousin of Linda Calderbank of Tewksbury, MA.
Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont St. (rte.123) Brockton on Thursday 5-8pm. The procession will gather at the funeral home on Friday at 8am for a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 9am. Burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Randolph.
