Obituary

Kasti Bonatakis, age 89, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2016 at the Holyoke Soldiers Home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Sept. 17, 1926 in Dorothy, West Virginia. He was a son of the late Michael and Sophia (Pappas) Bonatakis. Kasti served his country in the Navy Sea Bees During WWII and the Korean War. He was in the Asia-Pacific Theater, including the Philipines from 1944-1946 and then in Korea from 1948-1952. He worked at Spalding Sports for 42 years before he retired in 1988. He leaves his loving wife of 62 years, Helen (Bitsakis) Bonatakis of Chicopee; his daughters, Georgia Desmarais and her husband Garth of Chicopee and Sophia Parnicky of Chicopee; his son, Michael Bonatakis and his wife Valerie of South Hadley; 1 sister Jacqueline Geralis and her husband George of PA and 6 beloved grandchildren, Nicholas Parnicky, Alex Parnicky, Jacqueline Desmarais, Anthony Desmarais, Lauren Bonatakis and Jack Bonatakis. He also leaves 2 great grandchildren, Emily Parnicky and Brayden Parnicky along with many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brothers John and Harry Bonatakis and also by his sisters Georgia Klinakis and Bessie Cruz. Kasti was a sociable gentle man with a quick wit and wonderful smile. He was devoted to his family and honest as the day is long. He was an avid Red Sox fan. He was also a spiritual man who regularly practiced his faith at the Greek Orthodox Church. His wife and family have been loving supports throughout this long journey. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him and whose lives he had touched. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Holyoke Soldiers Home for the loving care and support shown to him and his family during their stay. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Grise Funeral Home, 280 Springfield St, Chicopee. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at 10:00 am at the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass in Sts Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church at 11:00 am. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery.
