Boulay, Alfred J. “Fred”
Age 77
Resident of Maplewood for 40 years
Died peacefully on Tuesday, May 10, 2016. Preceded in death by parents Alma (Olivier) and Joseph T Boulay; brother Richard Boulay. Survived by loving wife of 50 years, Barbara "Penny" (Diem) Boulay; children Peter (Nancy) Boulay and Patrice (Chad) Ramaley; grandchildren Carter and Addyson Ramaley; Ben and Charlie Boulay; many nieces and nephews; brother Raymond (Marcie) Boulay and sisters Diane Tate and Claudette Griffin Fred was very proud of his native Canada, where he was born in Coniston Ontatio. After his father passed away, Fred, along with his mother and siblings moved to Mooseheart Orphanage in Illinois in 1952. While there Fred was very active in sports, band, and choir, and especially enjoyed playing football. After graduation he joined the Marine Corps (Semper fi) After the Marine Corps he worked as a barber in St. Charles Illinois and married Penny Diem in January 1966. They moved to Minnesota a few years later and Fred became the Personnel Manager at the Nabisco Cream of Wheat Plant in Minneapolis. He was later employed at Health Partners for 20 years. When Fred retired he launched Boulay's Outfitters (BO) and brought many groups to the Boundary Waters. A lifelong "Seasoned Scouter" he was a Canadian and a US Boy Scout and became a leader in 1978 and stayed with scouting the rest of his life. He was a scoutmaster for Troop 461 at Presentation and earned the Ray Kappel, the Bronze Pelican and the Silver Beaver Award. He was also active in the Order of the Arrow and was honored to be an Antelope with Wood Badge. He never forgot his native Canada and returned there each year to fish for his "elusive" walleye at Lac Des Mille Lacs near Upsala, Ontario. He continued to be an avid golfer throughout his life and even achieved a "hole in one." Fred's glass was always half full, never half-empty. It's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years. Memorial Mass 11 AM, Monday, May 16th at PRESENTATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1725 Kennard at Larpenteur, Maplewood, MN, with a gathering 2 hours prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.
