Marie Alta (Butcher) Williams, 91, peacefully passed away at the Groton Regency Nursing Home on the evening of Monday, May 9, 2016, following a brief illness.
She was born in Willimantic, on Nov. 16, 1924, the youngest of five children born to Marie (Stearns) Butcher and Edgar Stancliff Butcher, all of whom have predeceased her.
Marie was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 72 years, Melvin James Williams Sr. They were married on Aug. 28, 1944, in Fayetteville, N.C.
She and her husband lived in New London for many years and then moved to Rockledge, Fla. for many years, before finally returning home to Connecticut. They enjoyed fishing together, especially in Fishers Island Sound, and spending time with family.
She is survived by seven children and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild. Family members include son, Melvin James Williams Jr. and his wife Annetta, of Preston, a grandchild, Sondra Kehne, and two great-grandchildren, all of Frederick, Md; daughter, Marie "Janie" MacLellean and her husband, Ken, two grandchildren, Keith MacLellan and Lynette MacLellan, four great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild, all of Arizona; daughter, Janet Daniels of Groton and a grandchild, Jason La Prade, of Clinton; son, Douglas Williams, and his wife, Kim, and grandchild, Victoria, all of Washington State; son, Toby Williams and his wife, Janice, of Waterford; son, Dale Williams and his wife, Maureen of Lisbon, two grandchildren, Heather Furman and Aaron Williams, and four great-grandchildren; son Gary Williams and his wife, Charlene, of Waterford, and a grandchild, Sarah Williams of Groton.
Marie worked at Sears for over 25 years. She was very artistic and creative and enjoyed drawing, doing ceramics, crocheting, and making dolls. She also loved doing crossword puzzles as well as playing the piano and organ.
There will be no formal viewing or graveside service. A private memorial service will be held at a later date by the family.
