Lawrence – Manuel Costa, 85 of Lawrence, passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at Mary Immaculate Rehabilitation Center in Lawrence. He was the beloved husband of Germana (Capaz) Costa, to whom he was married for 66 years.
Manuel was born in Azores, Portugal on September 18, 1930, the son of Manuel Silveira de Costa and Rosa Leonor de Costa. He came to the United States in September 1968, where he then lived in Lawrence. He worked at Malden Mills in Lawrence for 30 years until his retirement. He was very hard working and very active. He enjoyed gardening and making his homemade liquor, “Angelica.” He also loved farming, playing cards with his family, and most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Manuel will be deeply missed by his wife, Germana; 3 sons, Mario Costa and his wife, Emilia of Methuen, Ilidio Costa and his wife, Maria Teresa of Plaistow, NH, Jose Costa of Lawrence; his daughter, Helia Costa of Lawrence; 12 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; his brother, Serafim Costa and his wife, Ligia, of Methuen; 3 sisters, Lucilia Duarte and her husband, Antonio, of Salem, NH, Zulmira Melo of Salem, NH, and Maria Lima of Toronto, Canada; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his son, Humberto Costa, his sister, Alice Elias, and his brother, Jose Costa.
Family and friends will honor and celebrate Manuel’s life by gathering for calling hours at the Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence Street in Methuen on Friday, May 13, 2016 from 4 – 8 PM. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 9 AM at St. Monica’s Church in Methuen. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery in Lawrence.
