Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Lawrence E. “Larry” Conway, 88, a longtime resident of Oklahoma Street in East Springfield and currently a resident of Providence Place in Holyoke, was Called Safely Home on Friday, May 6, 2016. He passed into Eternal Life at Mary’s Meadow in Holyoke surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. He was born in Springfield on November 17, 1927, a beloved son of the late Francis J. and Edith H. (Lee) Conway. He was raised in Springfield, graduated from the former Springfield Trade High School and was a lifelong resident of Springfield. Larry served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and attained the rank of Motor Machinist Mate Third Class. He received the American Area Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Following his military service, he returned to Springfield and joined the Springfield Police Department where he served the city for over 35 years. While working as a Police Officer, Larry furthered his education and, in 1982, received an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Springfield Technical Community College. He also worked part-time for 30 years for the Springfield School Department Lunch Program as a maintenance man and delivery driver. He was a communicant of Saint Mary Church in East Springfield where he was a member of the Men’s Club and a longtime bingo volunteer. He was a member of the Marconi Club in Springfield where he enjoyed their monthly dinners, card games and having a “cold one” with his many friends. He was also a member of the Galaxy Community Council at Westover Air Reserve Base, the Veterans’ of Foreign Wars Post 420 in East Springfield, the Police and Fire Department Retiree’s Club and the Massachusetts Police Association. In addition, Larry was a member of the West Springfield Atomics Semi-Pro Football League, an off-season coach for the Cathedral Hockey Team and a Past Democratic Chairman of Ward 2 for the City of Springfield. He was the first hot dog vendor in the City of Springfield and was known as “Deputy Dog”. Larry was a Democrat but over the past few months changed his allegiance to Republican Donald Trump and was elated to see him win the Republican Presidential nomination. Larry moved to Providence Place in Holyoke in 2014. His family would like to express their thanks to the many new friends he made there and his many caregivers who watched over him. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and soul mate, Laura M. (Duval) Conway who was Called Home on July 16, 2012. They were married on September 12, 1953 at the Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel in Springfield and were blessed with over 58 years of happiness together. He leaves his loving son, Kevin J. Conway and his wife, Theresa, of Wilbraham; his son, Thomas F. Conway of Holyoke; his two cherished grandchildren, Ryan M. Conway and his wife, Jolette, of Wilbraham and Taylor C. Conway of Raleigh, NC; and his three cherished great-granddaughters who loved their “Great Poppie”, Rilynn, Emerson and Cardin Conway. His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday morning, May 11, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.). His Committal Service with United States Navy Military Honors will follow at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to Providence Place, 5 Gamelin Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.
