Paul Edward Hughes, age 64, passed away at noon on Sunday May 1st at the Catholic Medical Center Manchester, NH to the sounds of bells ringing at nearby churches. His brother Stephen V. Hughes III and his love Janet Beaulieu were by his side.
Paul was born March 4, 1952 in Methuen, MA, to the late Stephen V. Hughes Jr. and Eileen E. (Collins) Hughes of Crownsville, MD. He grew up on Tower Hill and was educated in Lawrence, MA, where he graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1970. He received a BS degree in Engineering from University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1974.
Paul was a metallurgical engineer for Chesterton Company in Groveland, MA for many years. While living in Rhode Island with his, now, ex-wife Susie Wood Hughes, he was able to enlarge his car collection to a fleet of five and also developed a fondness for oystering and clam digging in his beloved Ninigret Cove. Paul loved anything mechanical which developed into his lifelong love of racing. He raced Go-kart’s, motorcycles, race cars and classic Alfa Romeos and won the majority of the races he entered. He retired to Weare, NH where he owned and operated Alpha Self Storage. He was a member of the Alfa Romeo Car Club.
Paul is also survived by his sister Susan E. (Hughes) Flanagan and her husband Dr. Patrick E. Flanagan of Crownsville, MD; his brother Stephen V. Hughes III and his wife, Lorraine L. Hughes of Washington DC; his niece Kelly A. Hughes, her husband David Carbajal and their two girls Sophia and Isabelle of Reston, VA; and his nephew Stephen V. Hughes IV of Palo Alto, CA.
Memorial services will be held at a later date to scatter his ashes at sea. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Catholic Medical Center of Manchester.
