Obituary

Henderson, John Thomas died at his home in Wellesley on April 23. He was born in Donora, Pennsylvania in 1926. He served with the 11th Armored Infantry Battalion in Europe during World War II where he met his wife Anneliese. He also served with the 65th Infantry Regiment in Korea. Decorations he earned included the CIB (Combat Infantry Badge), Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and the United Nations Korean Service Medal. His army career also included serving at Fort Leavenworth, Fort Benning and Fort Totten. Prior to his retirement in 1968, he served in the Office of the Chief of Staff and Secretary of the Army. Tom also earned graduate degrees in Education and Business while serving in the Army.

After his retirement from the Army, Tom and Anneliese moved to Wellesley, in 1968, when he accepted a position with the Bank of Boston. Tom worked in the Finance Division and the Commercial Credit and Loan Operations, before retiring in 1989. In retirement Tom and Anneliese enjoyed supporting various arts and civics organizations and traveled extensively sharing the belief that the arts and travel can bring different cultures and countries together. He served for ten years as the president of the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra. He was a member of St. Andrew's Church, the order of the Scottish Clan, the Retired Officers Association, Nehoiden Golf Club, the Boston Ballet Benefactors Circle and a regular attendee of the Boston Symphony Friday afternoon performances. He and his wife were long time supporters of the Handel and Haydn Society and the Boston Lyric Opera.

Tom is survived by his wife, Anneliese, children John and his wife Carolyn of Harrisburg, Pa. Katherine and her wife Alejandra of New York City and East Hampton, NY, Christine and her husband Stephen, and his beloved grandchildren, Jenna and her husband Alex, Joe, John and Thomas.

A celebration of Tom's life for family and friends will take place on June 11, 2016 in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 79 Denton Rd., Wellesley at 11AM. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
