CHICOPEE – Alphonse H. “Al” Amero, 89, a longtime resident of the Sandy Hill section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, April 20, 2016. He passed into Eternal Life at the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke surrounded by the care and comfort of his wonderful caregivers and his comrades-at-arms. He was born in West Haven, Connecticut on October 31, 1926, a beloved son of the late Edward and Anna (St. Jean) Amero. At a young age, his family moved to Holyoke where, in 1945, he graduated from the former Precious Blood High School. In 1955, he moved to Chicopee where he lived for many years. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II and attained the rank of Private First Class. He served with the Battery A 338th Field Artillery Battalion and received the Army of Occupation Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was employed by the former Monsanto Chemical Corporation in Indian Orchard and had last worked for 30 years as a Sheet Metal Construction Manager for the Hurley & David Heating and Air Conditioning Company in Springfield. He was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee where he served his parish as a Eucharistic Minister and a Senior Funeral Altar Server. He was a member of the Elder Council 69 Knights of Columbus in Chicopee, a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society and a former member of the Aldenville American Legion Post 337. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Natalie M. (Medrek) Amero who was Called Home on May 29, 2013. They were married on February 11, 1950 at the Basilica of Saint Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr in Chicopee and were blessed with over 63 years of happiness together. He also leaves his loving daughter and son-in-law, Janet L. DiPietro and her husband, Philip, of West Springfield; his cherished granddaughter, Lori A. Fallon and her husband, Joseph, of Longmeadow; his three cherished great-grandchildren whom he adored, Mary, Joseph and Tommy Fallon, all of Longmeadow; his dear brother-in-law, Eugene Corbeil of Chicopee; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Amero and Medrek families. Besides his beloved parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his dear sister, Rose Marie Corbeil who was Called Home on August 25, 2010. His funeral will be held on Wednesday morning, April 27, 2016 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Burial with United States Army Military Honors will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
