Obituary

Dr. William F. O'Donnell, Jr., 85, of New Bedford died Monday July 4, 2005 at New Bedford Health Care Center after a brief illness. He was the husband of Mary Ellen (Stanley) O'Donnell; they were married for 58 years.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late William F. and Mary Ann (Hughes) O'Donnell, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.

He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.

Dr. O'Donnell was a well-known orthodonist who maintained his practice in New Bedford for many years until his retirement.

He was a graduate of New Bedford High School, Boston College, Georgetown University Dental School, and Tufts University School of Orthodontics. He served as a Lieutentant in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps during World War II and the Korean War. He was a former member of the Serra Club of New Bedford, the Country Club of New Bedford, and the Massachusetts Dental Society. He was a former President of the Massachusetts Orthodontic Society.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, William F. O'Donnell III of New Bedford and Thomas S. O'Donnell and his wife Tiffany of Annapolis, Maryland; three daughters, Julia Sheehan of West Wareham, Patricia Manning and her husband James of Lowell, and Mary Ann Kaempf of New Bedford; a sister, Teresa Buckley of Dartmouth; nine grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Dr. John O'Donnell and Eileen Stuart.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Thursday July 7, 2005 at 9 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours Wednesday July 6, 2005 from 4-8 PM. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
