Virginia L. (Leitao) Cardozo, 96, of Plymouth passed away Saturday April 16, 2016 after a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late Antonio Cardozo.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Antonio Neves Leitao and Anna Silva Garcia Leitao, she lived in the Boston area for many years before moving to Plymouth in 2000.
Mrs. Cardozo was formerly employed as a telelphone operator for Bell Telephone Company.
She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and was active in the Portuguese Credit Union in Cambridge.
Virginia was the beloved sister of the Honorable George N. Leighton of Plymouth, and the late Georgina L. Teixeira, Arthur N. Leitao, John N. Leitao, Candida Leitao, and Antonio Leitao. She was the loving aunt of Ronald C. Teixeira and his wife Susan of Spencer, Faith Demiranda and her husband Manuel of Plymouth, Antonio Leitao of Taunton, Candida Leitao of Rhode Island, Virginia Ann Reynolds of Ohio, Barbara E. Whitfield and her husband Robert, of Chicago, Ill., and the late Luiza Ann Gonsalves. She is also survived by several other nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and cousins, and her Godchild, Virginia Alves.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, New Bedford, with burial following at St. John's Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday morning from 9:30-10:30 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, prior to the Mass.
