Obituary

CHICOPEE – John L. Belle-Isle, 89, of Ridgewood Village in the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, April 14, 2016. He passed into Eternal Life at the Jewish Geriatric Life Care Center in Longmeadow surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Laconia, New Hampshire on April 19, 1926, a beloved son of the late Jean Baptiste Belle-Isle and Maria (Michaud) Belle-Isle Smith. He was raised and schooled in Laconia and lived there for many years. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and attained the rank of Seaman First Class. He received the American Area Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Area Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. In 1947, following his military service he moved to Springfield. He later lived in the Aldenville section of Chicopee for many years before moving to the Fairview section around 1994. John was a Union Carpenter for Local 108 and was employed for many years by the former Leonard Berneche Construction and the William J. Quinn Construction Companies, both in Chicopee. He was a member of the American Legion Post 353 in Willimansett, an avid golfer at the Chicopee and Westover Country Clubs and a member of the Prime Timers Bowling League in Chicopee. He was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee. He leaves his beloved wife, Cecile L. “Ceil” (Croteau) Belle-Isle. They were married on July 22, 1950 at Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville and were blessed with over 65 years of happiness together. He also leaves his two loving children, William J. Belle-Isle of Phoenix, AZ and Darlene R. Belle-Isle and her partner, Cathy A. Jameson, of Ludlow; his cherished grandson, Michael J. Belle-Isle of Phoenix, AZ; his dear brother, Roger Belle-Isle and his wife, Audrey, of Dover, NH; his dear sister, Claire Guenthner of Merrimack, NH; his dear sister-in-law, Jeannette Riberdy and her husband, Alfred, of Feeding Hills; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Belle-Isle and Croteau families. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his dear sister, Madeline Fleury and his dear sister-in-law, Claire Richards. His relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday morning, April 23, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial with US Navy Military Honors will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
