Obituary

SOUTH HADLEY – Carol A. (Friel) Syrek, 87, a longtime resident of Miami Street in South Hadley, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, April 7, 2016. She passed into Eternal Life at Heritage Hall North in Agawam after a Long Journey Home from Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born in Holyoke on December 11, 1928, a beloved daughter of the late William and Rose (Nestor) Friel. She was raised and schooled in South Hadley and was a lifelong resident of the town. She was employed in the cosmetics department at the former Forbes & Wallace Department Store in Holyoke and later worked in the fine jewelry department at the former G Fox at the Holyoke Mall. Carol was a wonderful seamstress, did fine embroidering and rug hooking, and made many drink coasters for her family and friends. She was a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Craft Group. Most of all, she was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who showered her family with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Henry A. Syrek who was Called Home on July 20, 2015. She leaves her loving daughter and best friend, Gale A. Lemanis and her husband, Stephen, of Chicopee; her loving granddaughter, Tara L. Page and her husband, Jason, of South Had-ley; her two cherished great-granddaughters whom she adored, Emma and Lily Page; her sister, Mercedes Hunter; and her many nephews, nieces, cousins, numerous friends and extended members of the Syrek and Friel families. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her brother and sister, William Friel and Rosemary Lynch. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, April 19, 2016 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her Committal Service will follow the Mass at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. before the Mass. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home.
