George H. Donovan Jr., a 27 year resident of Naples, Florida and former longtime resident of Weymouth, entered into eternal life on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at his home in Naples, Florida following an extended illness. He was 93 years old.
George was born in Boston on July 31, 1922, a son of the late George H. Donovan and Mary (McElroy) Donovan. He grew up in Jamaica Plain where he was educated in the Boston Public School system. George enlisted into the United States Army on November 21, 1942 and served his country faithfully and with courage during World War II. He was discharged on February 15, 1946 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Following his discharge from the United States Army, George enlisted into the Massachusetts Army National Guard and retired as a Major in 1982. George worked for Schaefer Brewing Company before retiring from Burke Distributing Corporation. George was an avid golfer, 25 year member of South Shore Country Club and passionate player and contributor to the Cardinal Cushing Golf Tournament.
George is the beloved husband of the late Evelyn R. (O'Brien) Donovan. He is the devoted father of George H. Donovan III and his wife Christine of Hopkinton, Marilyn Switzer and her husband Bob of Bonita Springs, Florida, Bill O'Brien and his wife Mary of Lynnfield and Lynne O'Brien and her husband Steve Johnson of Cohasset. He is the loving grandfather to Michael and Andrea Switzer, Frank Mundo, Christopher and Caroline O'Brien, Shannon, Megan and Lauren Donovan. He is the beloved brother of Robert Donovan of Scottsdale, Arizona and the late Leo Donovan. He is the loving companion to Lorraine Paquette of Bonita Springs, Florida.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend George's Funeral Mass on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. in the Immaculate Conception Church, 720 Broad St. Weymouth. His burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne will be private.
