George A. Lauro, MD, 87

George A. Lauro, MD, age 87, of Mansfield, formerly of Plainville and North Attleboro, passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro.
He was the beloved husband of Sylvia (DeSimone) Lauro, MD to whom he wed on June 15, 1957.
Born in Providence, RI on May 5, 1928, he was a loving son of the late Michael and Anna (Fossella) Lauro.
George grew up in the Federal Hill section of Providence and was a graduate of Classical High School. He continued his education, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry from Brown University. While in high school and college he excelled in track and field, and football.
He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on November 26, 1951 with the rank of SGT (T).
Upon discharge from the service, George returned to medical school in Philadelphia, receiving his MD as a medical doctor.
Dr. Lauro practiced family medicine in North Attleboro and then served his residency in Pathology for four years at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.
Dr. Lauro next began work as a Pathologist at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, where he ran the Pathology Dept. and Laboratory for the hospital until retiring. Following retirement, he worked for the State of Rhode Island Medical Examiners Office till the age of 81.
Dr. Lauro was a member of the American College of Pathology and the American Medical Association.
He had made his home in Mansfield for nearly 3 years, and formerly resided in Plainville for 43 years and in North Attleboro for 10 years.
Since living at the Village of Willow Crossings, Dr. Lauro was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield and a former longtime parishioner of St. Martha’s Church in Plainville. His hobbies included deep sea fishing, traveling with his family and gardening.
In addition to his beloved wife of nearly 59 years, he is survived by his devoted sons George L. Lauro and his wife Joyce of Canton, Gregory R. Lauro MD and his wife Krista of Pennsylvania and David M. Lauro of Attleboro. He was the cherished grandfather of Christina, Michael, Gus and Ben Lauro. He was the brother of the late Carl and Richard Lauro.
His funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Saturday, April 9th at 12 Noon in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt St. (Route 106) Mansfield.
Visiting hours will be held prior to church services on Saturday morning from 9:30-11:30 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield.
Burial with military honors will be held on Monday, April 11th at 1:00 P.M. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
