Obituary

LaPlante, Rev. Philip L. SM, of Weymouth passed away March 30, 2016. Beloved son of the late Pierre and Alvina LaPlante. Brother of Clement LaPlante and his wife Jeannine of Derry, NH, Rita Prescott of WA, and Lucienne LaPlante of FL. Fr. LaPlante is also survived by his primary caregiver, for the last 10 years, Susan Gallagher of Weymouth and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend A funeral Mass celebrated at Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Church, 270 Elliot St. Newton Saturday morning at 11. Visiting hours will be held at the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home, 326 Granite Ave, Milton, Friday 4 to7 pm. Burial will be in Van Buren, ME. Father LaPlante attended the Marist Seminary in Bedford, MA, the Marist Seminary in Sillary, Quebec, the Novitiate in Staten Island, NY, the Marist College & Seminary in Framingham, MA and the Marist College in Washington DC. Among his many assignments Fr. LaPlante served as assistant & later Pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Haverhill, assistant at Sacred Heart Parish, Lawrence, St. John the Baptist Parish, Brunswick, ME, and at Our Lady of Pity Parish, Cambridge, as Vocation Director at The Provincial House, Boston, as Pastor of St. Theresa Parish, Methuen, Associate at St. Vincent, So. Boston, Waterfront Chaplain at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, and Pastor of Our Lady of Victories Church in the Back Bay for years. During his career Father served as a member of the Marist Provincial Council and as Vicar Provincial for several years. A tireless fundraiser for the Boston Archdiocese, he founded the Cardinal’s Stewardship Appeal & worked with Cardinal Medeiros on various fundraising events for the Diocese. A volunteer at the Long Island Shelter, he cared for the homeless, produced and was the broadcast host of a radio Program – Feed the Homeless. While serving in Boston, Fr. LaPlante was known as the Chaplain for the Theatre District and for the Boston Marathon as he celebrated the Mass for the marathon runners. In 1993 he was named the WBZ Man of the year for his charitable efforts.
