Eileen McLaughlin, 89, died Friday morning, July 1, 2005 at Lakes Region General Hospital. Born in Laconia, on April 6, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Regina (Girouard) McLaughlin, and had been a resident of Laconia for most of her life.
Eileen was employed by the State of New Hampshire Health Department as a secretary and editorial assistant in the Radiation Department from 1948-1996 retiring at the age of 80.
She was a graduate of Laconia High School, class of 1933, Valedictorian. She was the 1st violinist in the High School Orchestra, and was a 4-year delegate with the All State Orchestra. In 1937 she graduated from the University of New Hampshire and received her Bachelor of Arts in English. She was also a member of its Orchestra. In her sophomore year at UNH she achieved 4th place in the National College Essay Contest. Shortly after graduating she returned to UNH where she earned her Masters Degree in English Literature.
During the years of WWII Eileen was a secretary and lab technician at the Connecticut College for Woman.
Eileen had many interests and hobbies, she enjoyed sewing, rug hooking and braiding, furniture refinishing and upholstery, as well as oil painting.
A brother John McLaughlin, and a sister Christine McLaughlin predeceased Eileen.
Eileen is survived by a nephew, Dennis Smith of Laconia, a niece, Carol Dockham of Laconia, a great-nephew, Daniel Dockham of Laconia, and a great-niece Elizabeth Staples of Laconia. She is also survived by many great-great nieces and nephews.
