Obituary

Haig Vartanian, 89, of Framingham, formerly of Newton, died March 28, 2016 at home surrounded by loved ones. Beloved husband of Sonia (Peskin) Vartanian for 61 years; devoted father of Nancy Tobin and her husband Gary of Hudson, MA, and Joyce Nuzzi and her husband David of Waltham; loving grandfather of Melissa and Scott Tobin, and Michael Nuzzi; brother of the late Aram Vartanian; brother-in-law of Susanne Metz; uncle of Michael Vartanian; great uncle of Ariane Vartanian. He was born on Dec. 17, 1926 Manhattan, NY to loving parents Vartan Vartanian and Siran Vartanian. Haig grew up in Brooklyn and considered himself a lifelong New Yorker. He served his country during WWII in the Pacific Theatre, a proud member of the U.S. Army Infantry. A 1950 graduate of Columbia University, he earned a graduate degree in Chemistry from Duke University in 1955. He worked in Research and Development for the Bayer Corp., retiring after 30 years. He was awarded 5 patents in the area of his research. He was a member of the American Chemical Society for 50 years. He loved attending the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the museum of Fine Arts with his wife. An avid reader of history, science, literature and philosophy, he also enjoyed watching sports, going to the beach, and having a good cigar with a friend. Mostly, his life focused on his family. Haig’s greatest joy was spending time with his daughters and his precious grandchildren. His greatest love was his childhood friend, lifelong sweetheart, and wife Sonia. Funeral Services will be held at St. James Armenian Church, 465 Mount Auburn Street, Watertown, MA on Friday, April 1 at 11:00AM. Visiting hours at the Aram Bedrosian Funeral Home, 558 Mt. Auburn Street, Watertown on Thursday from 5–8 PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
