Obituary

Emma L. Scarpellini, 89

Dateline: Mansfield, MA

Emma L. Scarpellini, 89, a lifelong resident of Mansfield, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2016 at Life Care Center in Attleboro. She was the wife of the late Bruno Scarpellini, who pre-deceased her in 1965.
Born in Mansfield on January 18, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Weston Monk and the late Nellie M. (Parmenter) Monk, and sister of the late Mildred “Ruth” (Monk) Varney of Norton.
Emma grew up in Mansfield and was a graduate of Mansfield High School class of 1945. She worked for a short time at S.W. Card Manufacturing in Mansfield, and in Attleboro for both the Robbins Company and Automated Machine. She was employed for many years by the Town of Mansfield, working in the grand old town hall, which later burned to the ground, and at its replacement which was built nearby. Her very first full time job was in the Treasurer’s office. Throughout the years she also worked in the Assessor’s Office, for several Town Clerks, and at one time was Assistant to the Treasurer. She was the office manager at Paul Metrano Chevrolet, and lastly employed as a teller/clerk at the Mansfield Credit Union. She proudly served as a member of the Mansfield Spring Brook Cemetery Board of Trustees and was their Treasurer for a number of years. She also volunteered at a number of Red Cross blood drives.
Emma was an accomplished seamstress and knitter who liked creative crafts like crewel embroidery, copper embossing, and decorative tole painting. Homemade apple pies, cakes, and cookies were always on hand in her kitchen. She could make beautiful arrangements using tree sprigs, wildflowers, herbs, and tall grasses. Though a dog person at heart, she loved to watch wildlife wander through the yard. Her fondest memories were of times spent with family and friends. She liked line-dancing, attended dinner socials, and went on senior group vacations. Of gentle nature, kind and polite, she loved interacting with people and being able to help them if possible. Emma will be remembered most for the genuine smiles she gave out in abundance and without hesitation to everyone.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Deborah A. Scarpellini, of Mansfield, nephew William Varney and his wife Kathy, of North Andover, niece Carlene Varney and her husband Bill O’Neal, of Norton, and niece Darlene Cogliandro and her husband David, of Uxbridge. She is also survived by many grand-nephews and nieces.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to visitation hours on Saturday, April 2nd from 1 to 3 PM at Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield, followed by a funeral service at 3PM. Burial in Spring Brook Cemetery will be private.
