Obituary

Jean Ann Muldoon Mastey, 58, of New Bedford died Thursday, June 23, 2005 at her home surrounded by her family. She was the wife of Henry S. Mastey, and the mother of 20 year old Andrew Thomas Muldoon Mastey, and 17 year old Sophia Muldoon Mastey.
Born in the Georgetown area of Washington D.C., she grew up in New Bedford, attending Holy Family Grammar School and Bishop Stang High School. She worked and lived in the Boston area from 1971 to 1985, then returned to New Bedford to raise her children and be close to her family.

She enjoyed a long and successful career as a nurse, completing the RN program at St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Saint Anselm’s College and a Master of Science Degree in Nursing from UMass Dartmouth. She was a member of the Nursing Honor Society, Sigma Theta Tau, Theta Kappa Chapter. Some of her achievements include the Student Nurse of the Year Award from Saint Luke’s Hospital, and numerous professional publications, presentations and research projects. She was the Chief Operating Officer at Community Nurse and Hospice Care in Fairhaven, where she was employed for the past 13 years. She was honored by her organization last year, with the dedication of the conference room in her name, in recognition of her outstanding leadership and commitment to her co-workers and the families they serve. Many family members have also benefited from her medical advocacy skills.

She also served with great pride the New Bedford Public School System throughout her children’s school years. Her activities included participation in the Keith Jr. High Marching Band Association and continued work in all aspects of New Bedford High School Music Department. She was elected and served on each School Council of the various schools her children attending, continuing her participation throughout her illness.


Jean Ann was known by all as the ultimate communicator, applying her creativity, listening skills, persuasive speaking ability, and genuine caring. She gave something of herself to everyone she met. Her twinkling eyes, warm smile, and playful spirit will be remembered forever.


Survivors include her husband, son and daughter. She was the daughter of Kathleen Leonard Muldoon and the late William B. Muldoon, DDS. She was the sister of William B. Muldoon, Jr. and companion Catherine O’Gorman, Kathleen Muldoon Bohan and husband, Mark, Patrick Leonard Muldoon and wife Eileen, Thomas P. Muldoon and wife, Patricia, and Mary Muldoon Walfield and husband, Steven. She also enjoyed her 16 nieces and nephews as well as 30 first cousins and six surviving aunts and uncles.


Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday July 2, 2005 at 10 AM at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, 121 Mount Pleasant St, New Bedford. Burial service will be private at a later date. Family will receive visitors at the family residence on Friday July 1, 2005 from 4 to 8 PM.
