TAUNTON – Mary (Sousa) Alves died at Morton Hospital on March 6, 2016, after a brief illness, surrounded by her daughters.
Born in Taunton on May 9, 1916, Mary was the daughter of Virginia Evariste Sousa and Joseph Sousa.
Mary is survived by four daughters, Virginia Sanson with whom she resided, Emily Sanson David and her husband Howard, Gladys Alves Perry and her husband Bruce Axon, and Aurora (Aurie) Alves-McCarty; three grandchildren, David Perry, Laurie Woodward and Breda McCarty; one great granddaughter, Elizabeth Perry; and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was educated in Taunton Schools.
She was a woman of many talents and loved creative projects, including cake decorating, crocheting, knitting and sewing.
Her elaborate wedding cakes were admired for their intricacy and uniqueness.
Mary worked for many years as a seamstress, including garment making and textiles.
She became head seamstress at Paul A. Dever State School and retired in 1981.
Mary was preceded in death by two brothers, Anthony Sousa and Samuel Sousa; and two sisters, Emma Tavares and Beatrice Morais.
Her funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Thursday, Mar. 10th at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Anthony Church in Taunton at 10 a.m.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
