Obituary

John Jackson Doherty, 86, of Duxbury, formerly of Brookline, died peacefully on March 4, 2016. He was the son of the late John J. Doherty and Julia Trainer Doherty. John leaves his wife of 65 years, Virginia (Palmer), his son, John (Jay) and his wife Andrea, of Duxbury, and four grandchildren: Eric Doherty and Arianna, Victoria and Caroline Doherty of Duxbury. John also leaves a sister, Mary Doherty of West Roxbury, and a brother, Raymond Foley, and his wife, Carole, of Boston. He was predeceased by his brothers, George Doherty and William Doherty. John was the Assistant Director of The Boston Public Library from 1971 to 1996. He served in the United States Air Force and is a veteran of the Korean War. He attended Northeastern University, and was a graduate of Brookline High School, class of 1948. John was a member of The Algonquin Club of Boston, Longwood Cricket Club, the Duxbury Yacht Club, The Massachusetts Historical Society, The Navy League of the United States, The Newcomen Society of North America and The Society for the Apprehension of Horse Thieves. He was the Past Commander of Post 11 of the American Legion in Brookline, MA and was a Brookline Town Meeting Member for 35 years. John also served on the Brookline Building Commission and the Brookline Advisory Committee and was a former Member of the Board of Trustees for Brookline Savings Bank.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday, March 11th, at 10:00 AM, at Holy Family Church in Duxbury. Family and friends are welcome to gather at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main St (rt. 106), Kingston, prior to the mass at 9:00 AM. Interment will be at the Mayflower cemetery in Duxbury.
